Product Description

This Winfield professional gold oboe reed is an all-rounder which favours most playing situations. The oboe reeds are made in the UK, held together with a brass wire and brown thread binding. The reed cane is attached to Winfield's revolutionary new gold oboe staple.

Key Features

  • Gold creates a warmer sound
  • Completely metal staple gives a bigger sound
  • Professional reeds that perform

Winfield's Gold Oboe Staple

The new staple design leaves only two rubber bands in contact with the oboe, allowing the reed to vibrate without the usual dampening effect of cork. The use of gold plating, which is a 'soft' metal helps to make the sound warmer and rounder. This allows Winfield's professional oboe reeds to make a truly free & vibrant sound.

Professional Reeds Designed to Perform

These 'u' scrape reeds use only the highest quality of oboe reed cane & wire to ensure that they work straight out of the box, remain consistent & last a long time! Winfield's expert oboe reed making skills & knowledge developed over many years ensures that this is a reed you'll want to use, with spectacular results!

This reed fits most oboes, however please note that the hole at the top of your oboe needs to be larger than 7mm to fit the reed in.

These reeds are of a medium strength.

The reeds thread colour may vary and the reed on occasion may not have the staple wrapped in a gold sticker.

Amazingly responsive

I have struggled with B / B flat since I purchased my oboe nearly 40 years ago. Not with this, the reed is a revelation. Dynamic range is also excellent - I will definitely be buying again.

Now playing very well, but needed a lot of patient breaking-in.

Please could you define the difference between the blue and the pink binding ? Thank you

Hi David, glad to hear you like the reeds! There is no difference, just a change thread colour :) All the best, Matthew

Prompt delivery from Crook and

Prompt delivery from Crook and Staple. As for the reed, you get a different sound from the metal staple - I find them brighter, and a lot louder! They are also more free blowing and responsive but stable across the registers. I like them and once I’ve collected enough staples I’ll send them back to be recaned.

The reeds look nice don’t

The reeds look nice don’t even play. There appears to be too much of a gap between the reeds tip openings on the side, so that air leaks out and no vibration occurs.

Dear Brandon,
It is important that we have feedback from all our customers, so thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.
It sounds like that in this hot weather we have recently had the reeds have actually opened up at the tip, this is really common and the good news is that it is easily solved. If you soak your reeds first and then gently press down on the top wire the reed will start to close up at the sides, do it a little at a time and try the reed in between.
We have a free, useful PDF guide on reed adjustment which you might find interesting, i've popped the link in below -

If we can be of any further assistance please feel free to get in touch with us.
Very best wishes,

It's great!

A unique style, and produces a wonderful tone! It's a bit too hard for my liking, but im still breaking it in.

Dear Michael,
Thats great to hear you love the reeds. On occasion all makes of reeds can take a bit of time to break in and as its a little hotter and dryer at the moment this can make reeds become dryer and firmer.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review.
Best Wishes,
